It is with deep sadness that Inyathelo heard of the passing of Mr Allan Gray, founder of Allan Gray Ltd, Allan Gray Australia and the Orbis Group.
While highly respected as an investor and business leader, we remember his support of entrepreneurship and education, and engagement in strategic philanthropy through the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation and the Allan and Gill Gray Foundation. Mr Gray supported many causes from wildlife to mental health, and as you will recall, in 2011 he was the recipient of our Inyathelo Award for Lifetime Philanthropy.
Mr Gray was deeply involved in the constructive use of philanthropic funds and his generosity influenced many lives, from young students who received scholarships and fellowships, to elderly citizens when he took a strong stand on the issue of social grant deductions.
Mr Gray’s focus on learning truly resonated with Inyathelo, which has been involved in several educational initiatives ranging from establishing the Certificate course in Advancement with his alma mater, Rhodes University, to an annual research survey of philanthropy in South African higher education.
We extend our heartfelt sympathies to all at the Foundation, as well as members of the Gray family, friends and associates. The generosity and vision of Mr Gray will be remembered by all whose lives he has changed for the better.
With deepest sympathy
Executive Director Inyathelo
