Gayle McWalter and Gahlia Brogneri, IPA 2014By next year an estimated 370 000 refugees and asylum seekers will have made their home in South Africa, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). But for many of these refugees, fleeing conflict or poverty, crossing the border into South Africa will not offer the relief they hoped for.

Refugees face a gauntlet of challenges in obtaining refugee documentation, accommodation and jobs. And while struggling to achieve day-today goals, many face severe mental problems brought on by the trauma of leaving their homes.
