Inyathelo, the South African Institute for Advancement, has announced the appointment of Jessica Rees-Jones as its new executive director from 1 April.

Ms Rees-Jones takes over from acting executive director Nomfundo Walaza, renowned for her human rights-related work both in South Africa and internationally.

Ms Rees-Jones’s experience includes working as a specialist consultant to both the Graca Machel Trust and power producer Cennergi; and CEO of the Royal Bafokeng Nation Foundation. She was foundation director and director of advancement for the Diocesan College in Cape Town (Bishops) and development director for Vista Nova School for children with special needs. She has qualifications in non-profit leadership and strategy from Stellenbosch University.

Zenariah Barends, chairperson of the Inyathelo Board of Trustees, said: “Inyathelo is at the helm of providing organisational development and support services to an extensive array of civil society and related organisations.

“I would like to thank our acting executive director, Nomfundo Walaza, for her insightful and effective leadership during her tenure. Now, we extend a warm welcome to Ms Rees-Jones and look forward to working closely together at a critical time in our democracy. With a clear vision, committed leadership and supportive partners, we can continue to be a strong force for good.”

Inyathelo was established as a non-profit Trust in October 2002. Its vision is a vibrant democracy in South Africa with a robust and sustainable civil society and higher education sector, supported by a strong local philanthropic movement, rooted in the African cultural heritage of sharing. Its mission is to help build a strong, stable civil society in South Africa by contributing to the development of sustainable organisations and institutions.
