Supportive, well-located and affordable work spaces, where users can network with like-minded people, are in short supply in Cape Town. However, Inyathelo (The South African Institute for Advancement) is offering hot desking, meeting spaces, conference rooms and related facilities in Woodstock’s trendy Buchanan Square.
The facilities for hire are aimed mainly at non-government organisations, but are also available to for-profit companies. Offerings range from a single chair at a communal “incubator table” for half a day (R50 non-profits, R70 for-profits at current prices) to conference space for up to 180 people, with catering.
Inyathelo also has meeting and training rooms, plus private, fully furnished offices (each suitable for two to three people), spanning R3392.29/month for 11.4m² to R7006.56/month for 28.9m². These are complemented by facilities such as uncapped internet, a book lounge and meeting pods.
Parking costs range from R594 to R926.50/month depending on the location, access control and cover.
Buchanan Square, formerly a textile factory, was renovated according to strict heritage guidelines. It retains much of the core structure and many raw elements such as exposed brickwork, but with an urban-chic, modern feel.
Inyathelo (in The Armoury section) offers light-filled, design-savvy spaces that feature the work of award-winning photographers, craft producers and designer makers.
“Physical environment influences how people feel, how they think and interact. All impact on the quantity and quality of output in the life of an organisation,” says Inyathelo Operations Director Feryal Domingo.
“Our main aim, when we created the hub, was for people to feel welcome as soon as they enter our premises.
“The design is also flexible to incorporate various work formats. Layout allows for different uses of space, whether you are in writing mode, creative brainstorming, or part of an information-sharing session with a crowd of people.”
Clients and tenants can also make use of other Inyathelo resources such as Funding Finder, an online donor database, and the Institute’s collection of over 2000 books, publications, DVDs, toolkits and directories. The main users of these resources come from civil society, non-profit, philanthropy, grant-making, communications, fundraising and higher education bodies.
